1989 § Founded by a group of nonprofit leaders as the first resource center and nonprofit service organizations § Participate in the founding of our NCNC (National Council of Nonprofit Associations 1990 § Incorporated as a nonprofit in the State of Florida § Florida Nonprofits were represented for the first time in a national arena at the first NCNA National convention 1991 § Opened a full-time FANO headquarters in Miami Lakes § Marina Pavlov was appointed as CEO of FANO § Launched first newsletter, “Florida Nonprofit Agenda”: (now the weekly e=newsletter “WZ New” reaching 7,000 nonprofit leaders § FANO’s education program informs nonprofit executive and their board of vital updates current issues, including financial information, funding and advocacy needs. FANO’s step-by-step program walks a nonprofit through the maze of filing a 501(c)(3) and prepares them for the legal issues involved. 1993 § Developed a financial management course that became a national model in partnership with the Accountants for the Public Interest and funded by the John D. and James L. Knight Foundation § Led the fight against the Istook Amendment to rewrite the advocacy and freedom of speech rights of nonprofit organizations § 1995 § In conjunction with Barry University, FANO developed the first Certification in Nonprofit Management in the State 1996 § Led the nation in support of the Charitable Giving Relief Act, a bill supporting charitable tac relief for non-itemizing taxpayers for over 75% of Florida taxpayers § Researched and published the first Florida Nonprofit Sector Wage and Benefit Study § Launched and interactive website, how hosting a 55,000record database § Created a directory of high-quality management training, consultants referrals, information clearing house and a sponsored toll-free Managers HelpLine 1998 § Initiate a 7 year campaign to lessen the red tape needed for all nonprofit organization to receive state sales tax exemption § Instituted the first annual Nonprofit Day I Tallahassee during the Legislative session 1999 § Mobilized a conference around issues, intricacies and legalities of privatization of child welfare, positioning nonprofits as savvier contractors to the government § Analyzed the economic impact of welfare reform on Florida and Florida nonprofits § Lobbyed to change healthcare reforms for nonprofits § 2000 § Launched the first Nonprofit Start-up Program 2001 § Researched and presented a white paper of disaster relief to the Knight Foundation § 2002 § Published information on how nonprofits may lobby and how to be effective. § Recommended t the federal government ways to streamline the federal grant process § Influenced the Federal Election Commission to allow nonprofit advocacy and lobbying § Reduced the number of rules that nonprofits would have to comply with through the Sarbanes-Oaxley Act (SOX) and where compliance was mandatory, educated the nonprofit and created model policies for organizational use 2003 § Produced the Grantwriting training video sold today by Jossey Bass Publishers 2005 § Introduced the first International NGO outreach and Technology based program in the State of Florida , to 40 mayors of small cities in Haiti. Coordinated with The Governors Advisory Committee on Haitian Affairs, Miami Dade College Homestead Campus and City of Florida City § Crated a rural/underserved community regional conference in South Dade funded by FPL and Miami Dade Department of Transportation 2006 § Instituted the first two-part Nonprofit Think Tank to develop the blueprint for Florida’s future § Provided nonprofits with an opportunity to dialogue with corporate and government leaders § Represented the State of Florida on the National Nonprofit Congress steering committee § Provided a forum in which the sector leveraged its strengths, advocated a new agenda, formulated and outreach strategy for the international NGO’s, and acted upon professional standardization for the sector § Researched, published and presented “Lessons in Leveraging: Best Practices Case Studies of Florida’s Municipal and Nonprofit Partnerships”.
